How much is a 1-hour photoshoot in Cape Town?

A 1-hour photoshoot in Cape Town costs between about R1,000 and R2,950. At the lower end you get one location and around 30 edited images delivered within about five days; at the upper end the hour usually includes more locations nearby, more images or a better-known photographer. Studio sessions cost a little more than outdoor ones on the lists we checked (R1,699 against R1,000 for the same hour from one photographer), because of the studio overhead.

What photographers in South Africa charge per hour

Hourly rates depend on the type of work. For portraits and families the first hour costs R1,000 to R2,950 and each extra hour adds roughly R900 to R1,700. Event photographers quote a two-hour minimum and then about R750 to R1,800 per extra hour. Wedding photographers sell packages rather than hours, but overtime on the day is charged at about R2,500 per hour on one premium list. Per-hour pricing is a guide only: editing time, which is often longer than the shoot itself, is built into the rate.

What changes the price of a photoshoot

  • Hours of coverage. The biggest driver for weddings and events.
  • Number of edited images. Compare quotes on images delivered, not just hours.
  • Travel. Published travel fees run R350 to R600 to Stellenbosch or Paarl, or R5 to R7.50 per kilometre beyond a set distance.
  • Location fees. Many wine estates charge a shoot fee or need a booking, and Kirstenbosch and Table Mountain National Park require permission for professional photo shoots.
  • Turnaround. Standard delivery on the lists we checked is 5 to 9 days for portraits and about 48 hours for business work; faster delivery can cost extra.
  • Products. Albums, canvases and prints are usually extra.

What a good photography quote should state

Before paying a deposit, check that your quote lists: the date and start time, the hours of coverage, the locations, the number of edited images, how and when they are delivered, travel and location fees, what the deposit is and when the balance is due, and what happens if the date moves.
